It may sound like a drastic measure, but the reason for the cancellation is because the team members haven't been paid in 20 weeks.
It's almost unbelievable that a professional soccer club doesn't have the funds to pay staff salaries.

Not surprisingly, the situation has begun to cause mental and emotional stress in the group and that is one of the reasons why Friday's match has been cancelled.
“Players and coach staff have not been paid by the club for 20 weeks and managers have not provided financial assistance,” is written in the communique.
We understand that funds exist for help, but there has been no assistance.
“As we've managed in the previous communique, this has caused emotional and mental crisis, affecting professional and private life, and this has only increased recently. ”

The situation seems quite serious, and there is no indication that it will improve in the near future.
Even if Bolton held the friendly match, there wouldn't be many first team players in action.
In fact, only seven players have been listed on the official website of the club two of whom are gatekeepers and as things stand, there are no available defenders. /Periscope. com/
