The Democratic Party's candidate to win the nomination to come up against Donald Trump in the 2020 U.S. presidential race, Beto O'Rourke, recently gave a fiery speech during the meeting with Gulah-Geechee Nation, an organisation of African-American heirs whose ancestors had been slaves to plantations in Florida and South Carolina.
His speech came after one of the participants asked O'Rourke if he would support the policy of [political] reparations that attempted to finance the damage caused to slave offspring].
“Yes,” he replied. We need to repair this place from its foundations: kidnapping people from West Africa, bring them connected to literally building the wealth of the United States” and not allowing Africans “to share the fruits of their ancestors' work is unfair. ”
He further added that white Americans did not know this story, and that only through its telling, learning and distribution could the implementation of reparations be achieved, reports Periscope from The Guardian.
However, O'Rourke has never publicly shared the enslaved history of some of his family.
O'Rourke is listed as a member of Anceptry.com, where documents exist showing that his grandparents and his wife carried slaves and supported the Conference.
In an interview, he admitted that he knew, as did his wife, that of his ancestors ' connections with Confederacy who tried to maintain the policy of slavery. /Periscope
