This is Volters' first visit to the Balkans since the post of supreme commander of NATO forces to Europe in May.
“We have come to this visit in order to meet with Serbian leaders, encourage communication and consider opportunities to boost co-operation between NATO and Serbia by supporting Serbia's military reforms, fully respecting its military neutrality. When asked how you see NATO bombings on Serbia today, Volters says it was a challenging time and that NATO made this decision difficult, following major efforts to bring about a peaceful solution to the Kosovo conflict.
“Given the development of crisis and the failure of diplomacy, NATO used force, was necessary and legitimate to prevent continued human rights violations, widespread murder of civilians. The UN Security Council has repeatedly highlighted violations of human rights in Kosovo, and a large number of households are obliged to flee their homes as a threat to international peace and security”, Volters has said.
