Earlier, Ethiopia's prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, announced that the country's army chief of staff was also shot while trying to undermine the coup effort in Amhara, a federal state in the north of the capital, Addis Abeba.
Speaking on state television late Saturday, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, led by military unifromia, said General Seare Meconnen was one of several victims.
