Swedish prosecutors have reopened the investigation into charges of rape against Julian Assange.
Deputy Public Relations Director Eva-Marie Persson announced the decision at a press conference this morning, saying: “I made the decision today to reopen preliminary investigations [against Assange]. ”
Prosecutors had withdrawn investigations in 2017 because it was impossible for them to develop, with the founder of WikiLeaks remaining at the Ecuador Embassy in London. They had said that investigations could be reopened if the situation changed, followed by Periscope from The Guardian.
Assange, 47, was expelled from the embassy last month after the Ecuadoran government withdrew his political asylum. He had spent seven years of his life there.
The lawyer of one of the women involved in his case had demanded that the investigation into Assange continue. Assange himself had rejected both charges against women. /Periscopi
