US Senator James Rich, head of the Commission for Foreign Relations in the US Senate, said that within the next two weeks, it has planned the vote in the Commission on the North Macedonia's NATO accession.
After the vote in the Commission, the membership protocol will pass for vote in the Senate. In an interview for Voa, Rich said optimistic that the vote could end within June. The protocol for North Macedonia's NATO membership has been signed by all member states in Brussels in February, and now the process continues in their capitals, which must ratify the protocol according to its procedures. The neighbouring country's membership is seen as a strong blow to Russia was opposed to NATO enlargement.
Asked whether NATO membership could impede Russian influence and its political mix in northern Macedonia, Rich said it would be the final step for Russia's refusal and the negative impact it intends to share.
Northern Macedonia is expected to become NATO's 30th member, a chance it took after the name agreement with Greece, which marked the end of a 27-year-old stalemate.
