A Muslim imam led prayers in Parliament to what was deemed a gesture of solidarity with victims of the attack.
The items that were read were from chapter “al-Baqarah”, which highlight patience, prayer and justice on the Day of Judgment.
While, Prime Minister Yacinda Ardern launched her speech with Arab urination “Ass - Salaam-Alaikum”, which in Albanian means “Page is on you”.
This was the first time the Koran was read in the New Zealand Parliament.
The act has been welcomed by Turkey, after Ibrahim Kalin, chief of the advisers of President Erdogan, praised Parliament. I commend Parliament for this warm and pleasant act.
It is these acts of courtesy that will overcome terrorism and fascism”, Kalin declared.
