The 40-year-old who in the past was part of Southampton and Portsmouth in England, as well as Real Sociedad in La League, were cuffed in the Colombian town of Kali, following a DEA operation with local police.
Viafara is allegedly part of a criminal group that has transported 4 tonnes of cocaine to the US.
The 40-year-old Colombian, suspected of being a member of a local drug cartel, has also played 34 matches with the Columbia national in the mid-2010s.
He retired from football in 2015.
