The Albanian striker representing Switzerland has shown his skills at the weekend, with two goals aimed at Bayer Leverkusen, to help his team continue the fight to secure the Champions area in Bundesliga.
But the fate of the attackers could have been quite different if a group of thieves had not decided to rob his uncle many years ago.
Mehmed lived with his family in Bellinzona after his father had emigrated from Macedonia in search of a better life for the family. In 1999, however, an event shocked the Mehmed family.
My Uncle Hasim ran a restaurant in Suzah, at Wintertur. As he closed the restaurant one night, he was attacked by armed thieves. They took all the money, but the psychological damage was worse. This is the scene that has changed my entire life”, Mehmed told about “Blic”.
I was happy back then in Ticino, and I had learned Italian except Albanian. But after the attack on my uncle, nothing was the same anymore. He asked Dad to come to him and help him with the restaurant, and morally, he was very scared.
That's why we moved towards Winter. As a child, I did not understand, even the fact that I did not speak a German word. But today I know it's the best thing that's ever happened to me in my life”, Mehmed explained.
The striker grew up at the Wintertur Academy, next to Zurich, where he became famous and then signed teams such as Dinamo Kiev, Friburg, Bayer Leverkusen of the latest Wolfsburg.
