Zaev: We believe the EU will improve historical error

Northern Macedonia hopes the European Union will improve “historical error”, and as soon as possible it will decide positively as the date is set for the start of membership talks. So says in an interview for Radio Free Europe, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev. He stresses that the country does not [...]

He stresses that the country cannot and cannot have an alternative other than Euro-Atlantic integration, but the negative decision, according to him, has increased the dose of despair, but not the determination to continue on this path.

“Anyway that despair is present in all citizens, it is present in me also because the European Union did not make a positive decision. We remain hopeful that this mistake will improve, it is a historic mistake, even though all European leaders, including French President Macro, feel that we have fulfilled all obligations, but said it still needs time. We will see these processes, but this does not discourage us from continuing with reforms”, says Prime Minister Zaev.

It also comments on weaknesses in the justice system, in the context of recent developments in the Judiciary, the release from the detention of former chief Katica Janeva, case “Reketi”, procrastinating court processes against former government officials, and so on.

I definitely consider that citizens have failed to feel the expectations they had in the judiciary, so we very loudly talk about what will happen in the future in the justice system. The judiciary is not under the control of executive power, we just passed the laws, so we expect many issues to be improved. We have transparent court processes for everyone to feel equal to justice organs, but that's not enough, it still takes a lot of work to do”, Zaev says, stopping later in the dispute over vetoing.

He says the process of verifying the purity of judges and prosecutors should be, and not only that, he does not rule out the possibility that other institutions are subject to verification.

The head of the Government of Northern Macedonia has not ruled out another possibility -- that of re-election judges -- but only after the framework has previously been chosen to eventually replace those who can be excluded due to various abuses.

Another problem for the head of government is the flight of the country's population, in particular of the qualified framework, which, in the absence of perspective or low wages, is leaving in the states of the European Union.

Zaev says one of the measures that have been taken is that of raising salaries.

Despite the recent increase in wages in education, we are even further below the average wage average in the region, not to talk about advanced countries where we are severely blocked. With the latest increase, we believe that we can get closer to wages. The same situation is in health and if we don't raise salaries we can be without a doctor, there won't be anyone to cure us”.

“We should motivate them as the situation could deteriorate”, points out Zaev, who at the helm of the government will be until 2 January 2020, after under the agreement for early elections on 12 April, the technical government should be formed on 3 January, without Zaev prime minister and two opposition ministers in its composition and being led by another LSDM framework.

Zaev believes the elections will be free and democratic and there will be no need for appeals by the international community.

We don't need the European Union to condition us have free and democratic elections. This government has organised two parties of elections that are valued both by European and US institutions. Why are the next elections not free and democratic? There should be no dilemma as far as the election process is concerned, Prime Minister Zoran Zaev has declared. /rel/
