According to public television broadcaster ex-poles, SVP won 26.3 per cent of the vote, or 3.1 per cent less than the last parliamentary elections.
The Greens gained 12.7 percent, strengthening by 5.6%, taking fourth place on the Swiss political scene.
In doing so, the Greens preceded the Democratic People's Party (CVP), which won 12 per cent of the vote.
The Social Democrats (SP) earned 16.5 percent, or 2.4 percent less, the Freedom Party (FDP) received 15.2 percent or -1.2 percent less compared to previous elections.
In Switzerland's parliamentary elections, the main political shifts are not frequent and government composition has been virtually unchanged over the past six decades, with SVP, SP, FDP and CVP sharing the Swiss Government for seven months.
Such a composition of the government could now undermine the brilliant Greens performance, especially if they manage to co-operate with another green party, the Civil Liberal Party (GLP), which received 7.6 percent of the vote, improving its score by 2.9 percent.
By doing so, green parties occupy a fifth of the seats in the Swiss Assembly, which has 200 deputies and will hardly be overlooked when the new government is formed.
