Research: Near 30% of women's children who were sexually raped in Kosovo suffer from slander by society

According to the preliminary results of the study, entitled “Epigenetic over internal trauma in Kosovo”, nearly 30 percent of women's children who have experienced sexual violence during the war have abnormal, low, or high levels of cortisol, which is a hormone that is promoted in response to major stress or trauma. To get to the record of this study, 130 women have been interviewed who had experienced sexual violence or torture during the Kosovo war, as well as have been collected blood samples from 120 younger children born from each woman, Koha Ditore reports.

Children who have been tested by blood samples have not been born children as a product of violence but are later born of women who have experienced sexual violence during the war.

In the study that was presented at the conference, titled “Inter-resert Trauma”, organised by the British Embassy in Pristina and the Kosovar Centre for the rehabilitation of Torture Survivors, the importance of early examination of women-born children was experienced violence or sexual torture during the war, and especially those born of mothers with post-traumatic stress symptoms.

The study, conducted by the CRCT and the Danish Institute Against Torture, is the first study of women experiencing sexual trauma and resulting in post-traumatic stress disorder, suggesting the inter-broad trauma transmission in the form of epigenetic changes in children.

Meanwhile, its Royal Highness, the Countess of Wesex Sophie, said at this conference that raped women, despite their courage, need support, acceptance and justice.

The conflicts leave many wounds, but the largest one is the stigma that survivors carry, not just here in Kosovo, but worldwide”, it has declared.
