Leaders of Europe's top countries have said they are prepared to recognise Juan Guaido as Venezuela's president unless elections are announced next week. Guaido declared himself president Wednesday, urging people to protest Nicolas Maduros and to bring him down from power.
By co-ordinated statements, Germany, Spain and France have said they will recognise Guaido as president unless elections are announced within the next eight days. France's president, Emmanuel Macron, has said that Venezuelans must decide freely for their future.
Even the Spanish government has called for free and fair elections, saying it will recognise Guaido as president unless elections are announced soon. “We are not trying to install or remove government in Venezuela. We want democracy and free elections”, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said.
The German government has also expressed readiness to recognise Guaido as interim president. The news has revealed German government spokeswoman Martina Fietz through a tweeting post.
“If elections are not announced within eight days, we are willing to recognise Guaido as president who could co-operate with European partners”, the statement says, “The Guardian”,
