According to popular belief, alcohol improves the ability to speak foreign languages.
A new study, published in the magazine “Psycopalogy”, has examined this concept, scientifically measuring it.
Researchers at the University of Liverpool have tested 50 German participants who had consumed small amounts of alcohol. The participants were students of the Maastricht University, who had recently attended a course to learn Dutch.
One group was asked to drink a pint of beer, and another group was asked to drink a nonalcohol drink.
The two groups later held Dutch discussions with two Dutch speakers
At the end of the experiment, two other examiners, who did not know who had drunk and who did not, heard the recording of the conversation and selected the best, who proved to be the ones who had consumed alcohol.
“Our study shows that alcohol consumption may be beneficial in promoting a foreign language if those who have consumed alcohol are familiar with the foreign language, said Dr. Inge Kersebergen, one of the authors of the study.
Scientists have noted that there is a need for further research to deepen the study and that a small dose of alcohol has been used for the experiment, since higher levels of alcohol can change cognitive and motor functions, such as memory, attention, and response in the right way. /oranews
