Today's visit by Russian President Vadicmir Putin to Belgrade well exposed the urgent need for the democratisation of the Western Balkans. Glorification of authoritarian regimes from state Serbia, which is also facing massive civic protests against authoritarianism, is proving that the region -- especially Serbia -- should urgently give priority to its democratisation and universal values for human rights. The European Union should not only be intended for investment and economic development, but especially for its values for democracy and human rights.
The social dominant spirit and statements by the leaders of the Republic of Serbia concerning Russian President Vidomir Putin's visit to Belgrade confirm even more that recognition of the independence of the Republic of Kosovo, its membership in the United Nations Organisation and Euro-Atlantic integration, included in the Republic of Kosovo's Parliament resolution for dialogue with Serbia, are not only conditions necessary for the eventual agreement between Kosovo and Serbia, but also the competition for peace and democracy in the Western Balkans and the European continent.
After the normalisation of relations between Macedonia and Greece, normalising relations between Kosovo and Serbia is a chance for a peaceful, democratised and developed region tomorrow. For another reality from what we see today in Belgrade.
