The United States is considering taxing 25% on some Chinese goods, worth $200 billion.
The review of this tax, which is double the initially planned 10 percent, is the request of American President Donald Trump, who wants China to change its trade practices.
However, the decision risks increasing tensions between the world's two largest economies.
China has already warned it will retaliate if the US moves ahead with the plan and charges Washington with blackmail.
“If the US takes steps to further scale the situation, we will take counter measures to protect our interests and rights of law”, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang said.
The White House says tariffs are responding to China's unfair trade policies, which, according to Trump, have helped create the high trade deficit.
The first tariff round went into effect on July 6th, when the US imposed 25% tax on Chinese imports, worth $34 billion. China has retaliated in a similar way.
