The suspicion that the rifles had been stolen from the police depot was born when the black market started selling at a price of $10,000, the Telegraph broadcast.
Paraguay police suspect that some of the stolen rifles have been smuggled into neighbouring countries, and are already in the hands of citizens in Brazil and Argentina.
Photographs of plastic and wood rifles have appeared in almost all of Paraguay media, where the case of rifle theft has been described as “with scandalism” in the country's police history.
