From January to late July of this year, 67 people have lost their lives in road accidents.
For this 7 month period, of the more than 8,000 accidents that have occurred, 50 have been fatal.
In view of this, the Ministry of Internal Affairs has addressed police a request for emergency measures aimed at increasing security in traffic a few days ago.
This decision requires: Implementation of security measures during road work, to take measures to protect safety in public traffic, to increase the number of police and civil patrols in road communication, as well as the announcement of relevant state authorities in the event traffic is jeopardised by foreign citizens.
But despite this decision, communications expert Bekim Ahmeti says the number of police patrols on the road is small compared to the roadblocks.
The police capacity is the same, with the exception of any patrol here and there. Imagine, there are no police on the streets of Pristina from 23 to 7am. And on the roads that are supposed to be frequented by police there is no patrol at all except for an accident when it happens” RTV Dukagjin, Bekim Ahmeti-communicator.
According to Kosovo Police spokesman Daut Hoxha, police are constantly working on greater traffic security, which, according to him, has resulted in the decline in the number of accidents.
The “Referenced statistics for July compared to the same period of the previous year, we have two people less dead as a result of road accidents. Even for the same period between January and July 2018, compared to the same period in the preceding year, we have four people less dead from accidents. However, our commitments will be consistent with a further improved security on the country's” streets, he said.
Meanwhile, in the MPB decision, writes that measures added to traffic should be implemented by 1 October, while communications expert Ahmeti says such a decision should be permanent, not seasonal.
