Yeni Gonzalez, from Guatemala, illegally crossed the United States border and was separated from her children. The Voice of America is pursuing the efforts she is making to take the children from the faraway centers they are being kept in. This is just one of the cases of 2,000 children separated from their families, reports Arizona American Voice correspondent Celia Mendoza.
After being held for 43 days by the American immigration authorities and separating her from her three children on the southern border while trying to cross illegally, Yen Gonzalez was released on bail.
She spoke with Voice of America after leaving the detention center of immigrants in Eloy, Arizona State.
I'm gonna start looking for my kids... It's been very difficult for me. My heart was broken into a thousand pieces when my children were taken from my arms”, says Mrs. Gonzalez.
It was held for five weeks at this immigration center in Eloy, Arizona, 3700 miles from New York, where her children were sent after isolating themselves when crossing the border illegally.
Yen worried.
I beg that they contact me by phone and say no, no calls. I asked him to learn something about my children from whom I haven't heard for days and told me you know what? You will be deported to Guatemala and your children will remain in the hands of this government”, reports Mrs. Gonzalez.
During an interview with Voice of America, Yen said she was unaware of the policy of “Tolerance Zero” that separated her from her children. She said if she knew, she wouldn't bring the kids.
They're already in New York City, Cayuga Center. The release of Yen on parole was possible by donations.
The race was paid by several families, the mother of New York City. Thank God they sent me confirmation that they had paid the $7,500 bail to”, says Jose Orechen, Yen's lawyer.
Its release coincided with a visit to the Tucson immigration center in Arizona, by First Lady Melanie Trump, who is closely following the situation of undocumented families and the work the authorities are doing.
I'm here to support you and give you my help for what children and families need, Mrs. Trump said.
Administration Trump says it will reunite families.
“They are subsequently joining family members, but under our legislation as long as the parent is kept in custody, unfortunately they cannot join and will continue to be held”, said Alex Azariah, Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Yeni Gonzalez is eager to hug her children as soon as possible.
