Cechinato becomes the first Italian to provide the semifinals of a Grand Slam in the past 40 years, and has been prepared to do so against the former French Open champion and 12 times winner of the main races.
The last Italian to take part in a semifinal was Corrado Barazzti in 1978.
Cechinato will face Austrian Dominic Thiem for a seat in Sunday's final.
