In an interview with the German media group “Fuken Grouppe” on Saturday (23.06), European Parliament President Antonio Taani has indicated that “ways of dealing with the migration issue should not lead to the dissolution of the EU. According to Taani, if each state were to act on its own interests, it would break up the EU, writes dpa. At the same time, the president of the European Parliament reminded the German parties in fierce disputes over the asylum issue, that migration “is not a problem only German”.
Italy and Greece are also under intense pressure.
This is not about separate national solutions. We need a European strategy”.
At the European Union summit on June 28th and 29th, the refugee issue is expected to be discussed among others. The Christian Party CSU in Germany demands that immediately after it decide how it will operate. Meanwhile this Sunday, European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker has invited EU member states for the migration crisis to a meeting in Brussels. 16 countries want to participate in this summit.
Possible camps in Albania, Northern Macedonia
Europe's stability depends on the stability of Germany, Taani said. It is “against measures on the internal borders”. The solution lies outside, not within the European Union.
“We must protect external borders effectively. We have to invest more in Africa to fight the reasons for migration”, Taani stressed. The Border Protection Agency Frontex should be strengthened by 10,000 people, he requested.
We need camps outside the EU”.
Taani said she envisions such centres as possible to be established in Albania or North Macedonia. But we need camps even in Africa. Libya is a place to stabilise. Nigeria, Tunisia, and Morocco are also countries that can be considered for camps”, according to the president of the European Parliament. /DW
