Increasing the influx of tourists in the first months of this year has brought more and more revenue from them to the Albanian economy. According to data from the Bank of Albania, tourist spending in Albania stood at 331m euros in the first quarter of the year, with an increase of nearly 10% compared to the same period a year ago.
Even Albanians have not spared much on trips abroad. But according to the Bank of Albania, their spending on travel abroad reached 254m euros, with an annual-based increase of 12.3%, the Monitor reports.
Due to the higher rate of Albanian spending abroad, the net balance -- the remaining money from tourist activity -- was 78m euros, up from 76m euros in the first quarter 2017, with a minimum improvement of only 2m euros. <
However, since 2015, the balance is positive, while prior to this period it was negative, which means that tourists coming to Albania spent less than Albanians when traveling abroad.
Previous INSTAT data shows a significant increase in foreign citizens' entry into our country as Albania becomes increasingly a preferred tourist destination.
In the first four months of the year alone, 1 million people entered Albania, increasing by 7% compared to the same period in 2017.
On the other side, the number of Albanian citizens emerging from our country's territory in the first quarter of 2018 is 1,563.003, increasing 5.9%, compared to the same period a year ago.
For both 2017 and Albania's Bank data show that both the expenses of Albanians abroad and foreigners have reached record levels.
Foreigners have brought about 1.7 billion euros to Albania, with an increase of 11.7% compared to 2016. The highest flight has been in the second and third quarter, with 421m euros and 588m euros respectively, corresponding to the tourist peak period (May-September).
In total, they have gone abroad in the form of travel spending, about 1.3 billion euros in 2017, with an 11% increase compared to the previous year. As with foreigners, higher expenditures were in the second and third quarter, respectively, at 341m euros and 407m euros.
Net balance, the difference between money entering Albania by foreigners and those coming out of Albanians, has reached a positive record 445 million dollars.
