Europe will respond decisively if the US risks our economic interests and others, said Germany's Economy Minister Peter Altmeier.
“The US is our friends and partners, and we want to protect our common values” said Altmaier.
But if the motto “America first” would endanger our interests and others, then they should expect Europe to determine its interests and fight for it”, he added.
Amid growing fears of a trade war, the US under administration imposed the 25 per cent tariffs on steel imports and 10 per cent on the aluminum in March, but granted a temporary release of tariffs to the EU and several other countries. Co-ordination is the first to end on June 1st of this year, reports “DW”, report Periscope.
Earlier in the interview, Altmayer also defended the Nord Stream pipeline 2, which Washington, along with many Eastern European countries, wants to block.
“They're looking for markets, which we understand, and they're easy to find places to sell gas”, Altmeier said. “But it's much more expensive than gas pipelines, so the Nord Stream 2 deadlock will not guarantee exports to them”, he said, referring to Americans./Periscopi/
