Over 550 years ago, there was one of mankind's greatest mass victims, and especially children, in history. At the time in Peru, in what is now Las Jamas, 140 children were killed.
Archaeologists found the mass cemetery where 200 children found skeletons. They believe children were killed in some kind of ritual. Most children had a special red pigment on their face, writes Live Science.
The victims were severely killed. They are believed to have been 5-14 years old, while their hearts have been cut off, claims anthropologist John Verano, professor of Tulan University from New Orleans.
It's been verified that skeletons date back to 1400-1450. The site where the terrible ritual of child sacrifice was held was inhabited by the Chimu people.
Before this discovery, the largest country of children victimized in history was found in Mexico, at the Tenochitilan Astech temple, where 42 skeletons were found.
