It was March 1999, which for the people of Kosovo was extremely serious. Long columns of people - young people with purses in their hands, crying children, older ones who could barely walk - were on a path they had no idea where to take them.

Feared at every step they took you don't even know where they were going, they just wanted to get as far away from the Serb paramilitaries who during 1998-99, killed civilians and innocents, and burned everything they had ahead.

Bosnian photographer Damir Sangolaj, who works for Reuters during the war period in Kosovo, had fired photographs reflecting the real state of war and the terror that people were experiencing.

In the photo taken by Sagoj, there is a long column of Kacanik residents, but there is a woman in focus with a white headscarf while carrying a baby in her bosom. Fear and anger are seen in her face.

This woman is called Sheriff Luta, who had survived very well that time, while the baby in her hands, better said her daughter, is now grown up and although at the time she had no idea what was happening.
She can't imagine that she herself was a protagonist of a photograph that was a major part of the world media during that period.

The sheriff in an interview for the Arbresh portal. Info spoke of leaving the house, which at the end of the war had stopped coming back, calling it a dream that had lasted for years.

On March 8 early 1999, we moved out of the house and joined the residents where we stayed in the mountain one night. After one night again, we fled to columns where the police stopped us at the Kachanic tunnel and separated our wives and men and then released us. Then we went to the village of Frunevo where we stayed one night and then my husband came and took us, and so we kept walking and so my father told me he would come with me after my husband broke up and I got bored, but my father told me that someone had to fight for the place”, she said by remembering that time.

The sheriff says that they had not eaten for 24 hours and were very tired walking in the column.
When we arrived at the village of Blace some journalists have come and I've been photographed. I was also told to reveal the baby's face but I had no power, I just wanted to walk. Besiana started crying a lot, and then a boy from the uncle helped me and he took her to a nearby school because the girl had changed her body color and I thought she was dead”, he stressed.
It shows how she has experienced the moment when her photo has circulated in world media.

When we returned from the war after a few days, the man came to Pristina and returned home showed me the picture he had seen and said he had appeared in our newspapers. I felt very upset but also excited”, she said.
Unlike her mother, Bessina who was a baby at the time had not understood anything but since she was raised when she saw that picture had expressed great curiosity about knowing the story of even the picture but also of that period.

I was wondering and I didn't believe I was in the picture. It was a very interesting feeling, and when I saw the picture, I asked my mother many times for that time. I couldn't believe my mother had held me that long. In elementary school they knew it, but in high school they didn't, and a professor when he told them they were surprised. I was also interested in who took this photo but I couldn't find the”

Sheriff's husband, Mirvat Luta, who has been in the ranks of the Kosovo Liberation Army, confessed to family separation and experiences after he was wounded on the front.
I was a member of the Army, and we were always prepared, but on March 8 we were taken by surprise. There was a huge and terrible offensive. We were forced to leave with family. Then on March 9 we were in co-ordination with O. The SEU where we've been sheltered and stayed on a mountain. Then we had to disperse because it was dangerous and when we came to Kacanik there was family separation. It was extremely difficult but we were in the KLA and we had to fight for the country”, he said, showing that they had carried many people injured.
Mirvati has said he was injured 16 May 1999 and that despite the injuries he had still not been separated from the KLA.

I didn't want to break up even though my leg was wounded. And I didn't know anything about the family they went and were alive. Three months later I met them and I didn't know anything about the picture. When I went to Pristina, I saw her in newspapers and also in billboards and I came home and told my wife. It was a very bad feeling to see the woman in that state in the photograph, but at the same time, the feeling of pride, because it would remain in memory of the generations to come, what a serious period it was then”, he said.
While the person who has taken this picture is Bosnian photographer Damir Sagoj, who has been working for Reuters since 1997.

Sagoj, during the war in Kosovo in 1998-99, has fired various photos of the departure of the Albanian population during the offensive of the Serbian Army.
The picture of the Albanian woman carrying her child for four months made a big fuss at the covers of world - renowned newspapers.

Bosniak Sagoj has been the contender for the Pulitzer Grand Prize, while winning several international awards.
