US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis has warned Syria that the use of chemical weapons by the Syrian government would be “very reckless action” until he quoted unconfirmed reports of chlorine gas attacks at Eastern Gutan, Reuters broadcast.
Mattis has also criticised Russian support for Damascus.
Mattis has threatened revenge against Syrian forces if the use of chlorine gas is confirmed.
The use of chemical weapons is very reckless. I think American President Donald Trump made this very clear in his administration”, Mattis said before a small number of journalists arrived in Oman.
Mattis has said he has no records of the use of chemical attacks, but has heard of many reports concerning the use of chlorine gas.
Saviors and opposition activists in Eastern Gutan have accused the government of using these weapons during the offensive in this part of the state.
The Syrian government strongly opposes such a thing.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has promised to continue fighting in Eastern Gutan, in one of the bloodiest events of the war.
According to activists, more than 1,000 civilians have died from fighting government forces in the past three weeks.
Mattis has said Russia could be a collaborator in Syrian forces' attacks on civilians.
Russia has given decisive support to the Syrian president Bashar al-Assad's government in the civil war of nearly seven years.
