“Buke, salt of heart”, is a popular expression that embodyed this behavior. But it seems that changing the pace of living after the 1990s, migration and internal migration, combined with economic difficulties, have made Albanians more distant and colder towards each other, less inclined to do charity and support each other in the event of need.
A survey conducted by Gallup, within the framework of the UN-published Happiness Index, which measured the generosity index, found that Albania ranks 91st in the world, entering the list of less generous states. The respondents were asked “Have you donated money to charity in recent months? For Albania, the answer to those who say no is higher than those who say yes.

Albania ranks badly in the social support index, in 138th place, where individuals have been asked: “If you are in trouble, do you have relatives or friends where you can rely on to help you when you need it?” On the same indicator, Kosovo is in 88th place, while Serbs (59th), Montenegrins (76th), Macedonians (85) and fewer Bosniaks (118). Italians, who rank worse than we are in the charity index, when it comes to helping each other are more willing.
Albania was the last in Europe in the world's 112th happiness index, out of 157 countries. In addition to low per capita income and high perception of the corruption level in the country, other factors making Albanians unhappy relate to the lack of support in each other. In contrast, Kosovo, which although it ranks worse in income per capita than Albania, the solidarity they have toward each other and the fact that if they have a problem they have an arm to rely on, makes them feel happier and more satisfied with life.
