Four scientists studying brain disorders will share this year's price of one million euros for their important work that has helped understand Alzheimer's disease.
Professors John Hardy, Bart De Stroper, Michael Goedert, Britain, and Professor Christian Haass of Germany have discovered the basic changes in protein causing the most common disease of brain disorders.
Upon receiving the Hardy Award, he expressed optimism about the development of new treatments.
Most modern drugs are based on their work in search of ways to block the collection of harmful proteins, such as amiloid and tau.
Alzheimer's disease and other disorders affect 50 million people worldwide, and none of the current treatments prevent this disease.
