One person lost the lives of five others were hurt by extreme weather conditions blamed for falling over 2,000 trees. Nearly half a meter of snow, more than half the monthly average, covered within just 24 hours the Russian chief centre.
The largest amount of snow this has been for such a short period of time ever recorded since the beginning of records. One of the photos taken by residents shows how St Basil's famous cathedral in Red Square takes its head off after a pile of snow. The bad weather was also caused by massive power cuts in hundreds of villages around Moscow.
Dozens of flights were delayed at the airports in the Russian capital.
But despite concerns caused by snow and frost, there were not a few Moskovs who enjoyed the moment, making it clear through social media that they were happy to see the return of the real Russian winter following unusual seasonal weather softness these past years.
