Rugova's interview was reprinted on July 7th 1989, in the newspaper Kosovo Voice, titled “When any small Balkan people tried to be superior in the Balkans, tragedy itself suffered.
This interview was given on the eve of the Serb manifestation of the 600th anniversary of the Battle of Kosovo. Such Serb tycoons, Rugova, described it as provocations and said he would respect it only if he is remembered as the historical and cultural commemoration of that important battle for all peoples of Yugoslavia.
At the world, Rugova said it was time for the end to intervene to stop the Serbian nationalist offensive.
“If Serbia further presses our national identity, then the uprising will break. I would warn the Serbs: they too are a small people. Everytime in the past if any small Balkan people have tried to impose as the imperialist force in the Balkans, they have personally suffered tragedy”, Rugova said.
