Lighting the fate of missing persons, Government delegation holds conference in Switzerland

On the International Day for Human Rights, a delegation of the Republic of Kosovo has stayed in Geneva, where they have held a conference on Swiss and international media on the issue of missing persons. In this case, a summary was presented for the work accomplished in the process of lighting the fate of the people of [...]

On this occasion, a review of the work accomplished in the process of lighting up the fate of missing persons during the war in Kosovo, respecting the rights of families of missing persons, challenges and the ongoing work was introduced.

This delegation is made up of Jahja Luka, the prime minister's adviser, appointed Dosses Keeper for the Missing Persons Issue, Ibrahim Makolli, head of the delegation for talks with Serbia on the missing persons issue, Arsim Gerjaliu, Director of the Institute of Legal Medicine, and Conception Race, Leader of the Government Commission for Missing Persons, accompanied by Benjamin Nikoliqi, consul in the General Consul of the Republic of Kosovo in Geneva.

In this case, it was highlighted, among other things, from the early days of the postwar to the present day, to the international institutions and competent local institutions (such as the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Government Commission for Missing Persons) are counted according to family demands, over 6,000 cases of missing persons, at exactly 6,057 missing persons, as a result of the war in Kosovo. And, as a result of the commitment of competent institutions, and with the support of the international community (before all the United States of America and Western states of the European Union and Switzerland), in trying to respect the family's right to know the fate and location of their loved ones (right, guaranteed even with legislation in power of the Republic of Kosovo), out of 6,057 cases of missing persons, there are currently 1,647 open cases of missing persons.

During the media conference, in response to the questions posed, the delegation reached out against work and results, we are aware that the current number of open cases of missing persons, of 1,647, are the most difficult cases to shine. The Republic of Kosovo, with the continued support of the international community, continues to be an example in the region and in the wider sense of addressing the issue of missing persons' priorities and handling any information that could contribute to resolving any case of missing persons.

However, according to the delegation, the address of resolving this problem remains official Belgrade -- Serbia's institutions. Therefore, this also means the need and necessity of further international support in particular through exercising pressure on Serbian authorities to be more cooperative in this process and through the opening of the archives of the Serbian army and police, to help solve all cases of missing persons.

Also, during its stay in Geneva, the delegation has made an official visit to the Central Office of the International Red Cross Committee, where it has been hosted by KNKK Director for Europe and Central Asia Patrick Vial, and Operational Coordinator for Europe and Central Asia Nicolas Fleury. During the meeting, the current state of the process of lighting up the fate of missing persons was discussed, as well as possibilities for intensifying co-operation between local institutions and international organisations engaged in the process.
