As Christmas Day calls for all of us to be unselfish with the poor and the impossible, the best example comes from Berlin, where a Syrian refugee provides homeless Germans with food.
We give something in exchange for the German people” That is the name of the campaign founded by Alex Asali, a Syrian immigrant in Germany, aimed at helping homeless Germans with hot soup. For three years, each week preceding Christmas Eve, Asali passes through the subway town of Berlin, taking with her food he and her associates prepare for the poor. He stops at Alexander Square, where the homeless usually live. “Many of them know and await us. Meetings with them are always warm, reaching the heart”, Asali is expressed for the popular German magazine “Bild”.
Last December 2nd, the Syrian refugee, who left his country in 2014 to escape the war, received an honour from the Berlin Municipal Council for his commitment to volunteer work. On that day, he went up to the platform with his German partner, who made a proposal for marriage public. Over 1 million Syrians arrived and were admitted to Germany when the war in Syria reached its peak. A few months ago, the German government approved a draft budget for immigrants, envisioning employment, education and different programmes for their integration into German society.
