The European Union has urged Kosovo authorities urgently to explain their decision to raise tariffs by 10 per cent in importing goods from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
EU spokeswoman Maja Kocijancic said this decision undermines regional co-operation and is not in line with the principles of the EU and Kosovo Stabilisation and Association Agreement.
“These decisions are a clear violation of Kosovo's obligations under CEFTA. The EU expects Kosovo, which currently heads CEFTA to fully fulfil its obligations and revote that move”, Kocijancic said.
The Kosovo government has increased the tax on imports for goods coming from Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
10 percent is the tax increase for all products derived from these countries by excluding those within international conditions. Trade Minister Andrew Shala, who proposed this move, said it is international practice. This was also supported by Deputy Prime Minister Enver Hoxhaj, who named it a response to Serbia's vicious campaign.
