According to a new report, air pollution as a result of traffic is causing losses of at least 70 billion euros per year in European Union health systems. It is estimated that three quarters of this loss are caused by oil smoke.
This research was conducted by the European Alliance for Public Health, while it was found that most of this is covered by taxpayers, through government-funded services. In the report, however, it is projected that this loss could drop by 80%, if some ambitious measures are taken.
The release of gas from the burning of oil has been a very controversial topic since 2015, when German carmaker “Volkswagen” was caught cheating on the amount of emissions. Almost all of this manufacturer's cars produced more gas than was officially declared. A scientific research had proven that some 38,000 people die each year from the large amount of car gases.
In Great Britain, most urban areas have higher levels of air pollution than those permitted by law. The damage was calculated by measuring the amount of gas emissions from cars in the 28 European Union countries and spending on the health system, without bypassing even premature deaths. In Britain alone, the annual damage from air pollution is estimated to be about 20 billion pounds, writes the Guardian”,
