“We are monitoring the situation. It is imperative that neighbors and communities around the Tree of Life stay in their homes. Don't get out of”, spokesman Jason Lando said.
At the time of the synagogue attack, a religious service has been under way, according to data published on the site.
From photos posted on social networks, there is a growing number of police in the area near the synagogue.
Pittsburgh's Department of Public Security tweeted that “an active attacker” was reportedly found in the area and urged people to avoid the area.
