So has Minister of Environment and Space Planning Fatmir Matoshi declared for Radio Kosovo. According to Matosh, the role of this green police unit will be in the pronunciation of fines against all who illegally lay waste.
Environment and Spatial Planning Minister Fatmir Matosi has said that at the meeting held long ago with the Ministry of Internal Affairs and with representatives of the Kosovo Police, they have agreed to establish working groups which are working on creating environmental police.
The “is established a group that is dealing with this issue, their task is to make a framework of what this environmental police will look like, what its competencies might be, what the number of environmental policemen might be, then what their distribution will be, and at the end, the discussion of how environmental police uniforms will look at”, Matosi said.
Luan Hasanaj, from the organisation “Let's do it Kosova”, which deals with conservation and environmental protection in Kosovo, has said that given the state of the environment in the country, the creation of green police will increase citizens' awareness.
A green cop had to be welcome, because primarily the presence of police for such a problem increases a little awareness of citizens, but on the other hand it would be effective even when it comes to getting fined those who throw waste”, Hasanaj said.
Matoshi added that there was political will to establish this directorate. According to him, the beginning of next year will find Kosovo with environmental police.
“I believe that the end of this year will determine what environmental police will look like, what its tasks, its responsibilities, will be, so that by January next year we will have environmental police everywhere in Kosovo. The initiative has political support both from the prime minister, government, and other political factors”, Matoshi added.
