Former Kosovo President Atifete Jahjaga has made a very touching post on her Facebook profile.
It has shown how Vasfije Krasniqi Goodman, survivor of sexual violence during the war in Kosovo, has broken the silence by speaking out about her bitter experience as a result of the crime that has been committed over her.
Jahjaga in this post indicated that in 2014, when the country's president had founded the National Council for the Survivors of Sex Violence during the War, this topic, as Jahjaga said was still taboo in the public sphere.
This is Jahjaga's full Facebook post:
“Today, Vasfije Krasniqi Goodman, the survivor of sexual violence during the war in Kosovo, broke the silence by openly talking about her bitter experience as a result of the crime that has been committed over her, including social stigmatisation and the hard way to seek justice.
Such very touching moments, at the same time, are evidence of the strength and courage of the extraordinaryness of survivors, who, in spite of adversity, are raising awareness that the use of sexual violence as a means of war must be eliminated forever and that the perpetrators of these crimes must face justice!
Today, as I hear the bold Vasfie sharing her bitter story with all of us, I am also reminded of the progress that has been achieved in fighting stigma, especially since 2014 because of our social mobilization. In 2014, when I founded the National Council for Survivors of Sex Violence during the war as the country's president, the subject was still taboo in the public sphere.
Therefore, Vasfiye's example is the story of hope that, despite all the difficulties, with each of us committed, we will assure the survivors that they and they are not alone, and that we will always be close to them anyway in the battle of next, that of access to justice!
The campaign as “becomes my voice” organised by KRCT and Medica Gjakova deserves our support. Truly, silence has been broken, has become a loud and unstoppable voice.
To the achievement of justice! ”
