Brothers John England, Clarkes England and Frank Morris through an Alkatrazi prison tunnel they had managed to escape 56 years ago, then turned to the sewers of San Francisco Bay and were never found, believing they were drowned.
But a hand-written letter was sent to FBI authorities in 2013, and in public it was released this week, suggesting that one of the fugitives John England may still be alive.
I'm John England. I escaped from Alkatrazi in June 1962 with my brother Clara and Frank Morris. I am now 83-year-old and in bad shape. I have cancer. We all made it that night, but with difficulty. ” reads in letter.
The claim of the letter that England was 83 years old at the time would be accurate because he was born in 1930, feeding speculation that the escapes have occurred and have been free for the last half decade, reports “Mail”, broadcast Periscope.
The FBI says this is the latest testimony that forced the agency to reopen the cold case of icons. The letter was sent to the Richmond Police Department station in San Francisco in 2013.
