Apostolova has an urgent call for Kosovo leaders: Special Empowerment Is Dangerous Action

The chief of the European Union Office in Pristina, Nataliya Apostolova, has stated that the latest initiative by some MPs to abolish the Law on Specialised Chambers and the Special Prosecutor's Office was a very dangerous act, which undermined not only the rule of law but also the credibility of Kosovo as partner of the European Union [...]

Apostolova has indicated that in recent years Kosovo has made progress both locally and internationally. Therefore, as she has said, Kosovo's EU relations have been viewed with optimism, constantly repeating it to the highest levels the country has a clear European future.

The European Union's first in Pristina has clarified to the newspaper “Voice” that the establishment of Specialised Chambers and Special Prosecutors is an international obligation for Kosovo and that the latter do not charge specific countries, communities or organisations.

These international justice institutions will deal with individuals who committed crimes. There is no excuse for anyone trying to prevent the investigation of crimes, the punishment of the authors, thus providing victims with at least a bit of silence”, apostolova has posted.

Apostolova, however, believes the Specialised Chambers will end without punishment, which will be an important step towards reconciliation.

“I do not want to believe that political leaders will deliberately go against Kosovo's international obligations. This would jeopardise Kosovo's future by negatively affecting ordinary citizens, who do not deserve this”, it has declared “Zerin”.

The chief of the EU Office in Pristina has called on political leaders in Kosovo to put national interests first and demonstrate that they are worthy of the trust they have received from citizens, as, she says, they expect to work for the common good and further integration into the European Union.

Otherwise, at the end of the month we left behind in two attempts Kosovo's leadership had failed to prosecute at the Kosovo Assembly session abolishing the Special Court Law in absence of quorum.

This was because representatives of the LDK, minorities, as well as movement “Determination” were not present at the helm of the Assembly.

But “Vetevendosje official”, Rexhep Selimi, has declared that this party will vote for the abolition of Special in the Assembly.

Therefore, this issue is expected to return to the Assembly after January 15th of this year, when MPs return from the holiday.

The Special Empowerment is estimated to be President Hashim Thaci's initiative, instrumentalising the KLA's OVL to collect thousands of citizens' signatures, which is backed by Prime Minister Kadri Veselinaj and Prime Minister Ramush Haradinaj.

Thaci, who had insisted years earlier that the Special Court be voted in the Assembly, has recently come up with sharp criticism of this court, saying it would not judge justice.

The media speculates that Thaci's statements are linked to fears of arrests that this international justice institution in Kosovo will soon implement.
