The South Korean Unification Ministry said Thursday it would provide humanitarian assistance to North Korea worth $8m. The move is the first since South Korea is governed by the new administration, “reported. Sputnik International” Transmission Periscope.
“We hope this assistance will help improve the humanitarian situation among those in North Korea who need children's vaccination and malnutrition treatment, as well as improve the diet of pregnant women”, the ministry said.
The government will provide $ 4.5m through the UN World Food Programme (ËFP) and $3.5m through the UN Children's Fund (UNICEF).
This decision was made after Unification Minister Cho Myong said this week that aid to North Korea was not related to anti-Geean sanctions concerning its nuclear and missile programmes.
The situation in the Korean Peninsula has escalated in recent months due to missile concessions and Pyongyang nuclear tests.
The UN Security Council has imposed sanctions on North Korea, which, however, have failed to prevent new tests from being passed on by gyan./Periscopi/
