International Organisation for Migration Director General William Lacy Swing said on Wednesday how the Ringya refugees who escaped from a Mianmar military attack accused the army, who had raped women and girls, Alzeera” reported.
Myanmar's government denies the claims, but has refused to allow international observers to investigate the case.
The International Organisation of Migration (IOM) is co-ordinating the humanitarian response between an exodus of approximately 440,000 people who have reached the Baser Cox site since 25 August.
A statement by the agency said Wednesday that IOM doctors have treated dozens of women who experienced strong sex “since August, but said such numbers can only represent a small “section of the current case”.
Especially women and girls, but both men and boys, have been the risk limit for further exploitation, violence and abuse due to gender, age and status in society”, Swing said.
It has been estimated that some 160,000 girls and Ringya girls have come to Bangladesh over the past month.
Two sisters who spoke with Al Jazeera said that they were raped by Myanmar's soldiers.
“Army tortured us”, 25-year-old Minara said.
Her sister Azisa, 22, said she had been raped by two men and was unconscious.
The two sisters were rescued from other refugees who helped them to cross a river to continue their journey back to Bangladesh./Periscopi/
