In an unusual verdict, a court in Skopje has condemned a Macedonian citizen for insulting Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Facebook.
Skopje Criminal Court sentenced “L. A”, which holds two citizenships -- the Macedonian and Turkish -- at 400 euros, and if it does not pay the sentence, it could end up in prison, Turkish news agency Anadolu reported.
The verdict says the accused was found guilty of the “publishing ironic and offensive positions in the direction of the head of a foreign state”, Report Express broadcast.
The indictment, filed by the Turkish Embassy in Skopje at the end of 2016, says the person “in his profile on the social network has damaged the image of the Republic of Turkey and President Erdogan”.
Macedonia and Turkey traditionally have good relations, in part because of the Turkish community in the country.
However, it is not common in Macedonia for people to be punished for what they write on social networks.
