The accident involved a group of so-called mountaineers “Mannlcarrcarte”, in the mountains southwest of Salzburg.
The Red Cross said that, according to the first information it received, a group of mountaineers fell down as they climbed mountains bound to a conop. Five helicopters have reportedly been sent to the site, Austria's news agency reports.
The extent of the victims is still unknown, the Red Cross said.
