Small ashes of gold can be used in the fight against cancer, a recent study has suggested.
Scientists at the University of Edinburgh have concluded that the precious metal has increased the efficiency of drugs used to treat lung cancer cells.
Dr. Asier Uncirte-Broceta has discovered that gold has the ability to act as a catalyst for chemotherapy.
The majority of gold properties are well known. We've been using gold for thousands of years, because it's safe, but also aesthetically, it's used for the restoration of” teeth, he said.
And it doesn't do anything to cells in itself, so an implant can be placed in the brain tumor and there it won't do anything, but we've designed forebears which within the device will become drugs.
The great advantage is that all healthy organs will not be affected by chemotherapy”, he added.
Dr. Unciti-Broceta has added that it is still not known how much time it takes to start applying this type of therapy.
If we were to get the support of some pharmaceutical company, they could bring it to the market for at least 12 years”, he added.
