In 2015, EU member states spent about 1.058 billion euros on health.
“Health” is the second largest voice of public spending, after social protection, with 19.2% of total public spending.
In Albania, health spending totaled 8.4% of the total public spending in 2015, 25 times lower than the EU average.
But even at low levels, the efficiency of health spending has deteriorated in recent years, as a large portion of the funds will be adopted by concession companies that are managing some health services with no measurable public funds.
On the other hand, Albania is experiencing an increasing burden of disease levels.
Data from the global portal w.healthdata.org shows that at the end of 2015, Albanians had the highest burden of disease in the region, as well as the highest mortality rate for any diagnosis. Albania ranks in the red zone for premature deaths, which were above expectations. /report tov
