Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman, known as Nelly Blu, launched a revolution in investigative journalism.
She's the first and only journalist to infiltrate, playing the role of the mentally unstable person, in the world's most notorious mental institution, the mental institution, located on Roosevelt Island.
Its purpose was to confirm the terrible stories that circulated regarding this institution. There were rumours that people were beaten and mistreated in the most brutal ways. Elizabeth was able to testify.
This is her story:
Elizabeth was born in 1864 in Pennsylvania. She was one of the 15 children of a poor family. Her father died, and her mother got married again because they had no money. The stepfather was violent, abused by her brothers, sisters, and mother until she once decided to divorce him.
Although the little Elizabeth was then only six years old, she realized that she would have to start working hard to support her mother and family.
Her great desire was to become a writer. He worked toward that purpose and eventually managed to be employed as the corespede of Pittsburgh Dispect. He worked for five dollars a day.
She soon showed her talent, understanding, and love of work that was rewarded. She was offered a better job and moved to New York. She was the first woman in the world to deal with investigative journalism, revolutionizing this area without knowing that she was going into history.
One of the most thrilling stories of it was when Elizabeth managed to be accepted as a mentally unstable person in the notorious malady “Blackwell Island Insane Asylum”.
She was beautiful and very attractive. It was elegant to give the impression of a real lady. As such, she knew there was no chance to infiltrate that mental institution. She came up with the idea to wear torn, dirty clothes and act like she was crazy. He started roaming the streets of New York City insulting people.
I've been practicing this crazy show for days in the mirror. It's best when you look at the distance”, Elizabeth had declared.
Soon some New Yorkers called the police. They arrested Elizabeth and sent her exactly where she wanted to be.
They treated him for 10 days and barely made it out of that terrible institution:
This hospital was like a rat trap. This is a fucking place that's easy to come in, but it's hard for you to get out. What I saw there is beyond my expectations. Doctors are brutal, unscrupulous, and aggressive. They beat the sick. Blood is everywhere. On the walls, on the floor, on the bed... Everything smells of fecals, urine, and blood. Food is cold, rotten and broken... A lot of people here are perfectly normal. It's as clear as day, but they treat them as if they were the biggest lunatics. Most are foreigners and have been locked up here just because they spoke a foreign language that no one understood”, Elizabeth confessed.
She barely got out of this facility. Her editor, who was known and respected, managed to get her out.
Elizabeth later wrote a book on her experience there. She was only 23. /Gazeta InfoPress
