The truck that broke down the German Embassy wall in Tirana becomes artistic installation (Photo)

On July 2, 1990, the Bodinak Star, along with 40 people in his truck cart “Skoda Liaz” broke down the wall of Germany's Embassy.

After 27 years, it becomes this installation, to remind new generations, the people's great thirst for freedom and democracy.

A friend of mine had met with an embassy employee who told him to come on, but hit the wall, they won't let you in. Someone inside the Embassy gave us a mirror, come on. With some friends of mine we organized the group. I went home, took my children and my wife. I also had a lamb, which I also got”, said Star Bodinaku, the driver who broke down the wall.

T Remember you hit a brick?

I still have a sign today. They didn't let me out one day, I stayed here in the first ambassador's room. Then we moved to Italy, and from Italy to Germany”, he adds.

T How long did you live in Germany?

In Germany three years. I didn't hit the wall because I didn't want Albania, but because I didn't want the body”, Bodinaku confessed.

After that action, hundreds of shipmen flocked to the embassy seeking to flee isolated Albania and from the almost semi-majorial system that had taken away their rights.

Those days have been extremely difficult and dramatic. 12 days in which we have sheltered on the Embassy's territory about 3,300 Albanians who stayed there. And that event has deeply marked the good and close relations of our two countries”, said Susan Schutz, Germany's ambassador.

I believe that a person who requires change is not just once in life, but every day of his life, even with this installation and this gift for the city. For all tourists, but also for those who are children, this is a way to remember that Albania is not the same”, said Erion Veliaj, mayor of Tirana.

This gratitude is especially dedicated to diplomats and employees of the German Embassy who had just arrived in Albania after diplomatic relations were established in 1987.
