Australian police have detained a terrorist plot in a plane, said the country's Prime Minister Malcolm Trandall. Four people were arrested in Sydney.
Investigators said they had collected investigative materials that improvised explosive devices were being created to carry out the attacks. Turnbull said the raids are a “major joint operation against terrorism”. He said additional security was located at local and international airports.
The raids took place on Sydney's outskirts, such as the Sury Hills, Lakemba, Wiley Park and the Punchbowl, Australian broadcaster ABC reported.
Australia's national threat level remains possible “”. Australian Police Commissioner Andrew Colvin said the four persons arrested were suspected of being linked to a plot inspired by terrorists.
“In recent days, law enforcement has become aware of the information that suggested some people in Sydney were planning to carry out a terrorist attack using an IED (intelligible explosive equipment),” he said at a press conference.
He said police did not yet have information on “the specific attack, location, date or time”, adding that he expected the investigation to be “long and extended”. ABC reported that a woman in the Sury Hills area, who said her son and husband were arrested, denied having anything to do with terrorism.
