The head of the Parliament, Talat Xhaferi, has warned that on 6 August he will announce them, which is due at the last moments of the minimum deadline. Under the electoral code in force, local elections must be announced 90 days or later 70 days before the day of the vote.
The 90-day deadline has begun to run since July 15th, while there are about 80 days left until October 15th. The deadline for election proclamation expires on August 6th. The elections are announced to the Speaker of the Parliament, while shortly after the signing of the decision, the State Election Commission begins with procedures for organising the campaign and holding local elections, which, due to the political situation, have been delayed several months since the initial deadline. The pre-election campaign for the first round of local elections opens 20 days before the election day, respectively, on 25 September. In the last 24 hours before voting day, those days are not allowed to hold the campaign or any other form of party propaganda.
What characterizes these local elections is reforming the Albanian political scene, as well as the decisive battle for almost all political parties.
For the ruling party, DUI will be crucial as it is held after parliamentary elections in which this party lost half of MPs and if it marks poor results it will be fatal for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
For the Besa Movement, they will be determining for the power and position of this party on the political scene in the future and will have impacts even in the upcoming parliamentary elections.
For other parties, which received smaller numbers of MPs such as coalition parties Alliance for Albanians and the Albanian Democratic Party of Menduh Thaci, local elections will be a battle for survival on the political scene in Macedonia.
The ethnic battle for Struga and Kricova will remain in this election, especially after the final cleaning of the voter list, where a large number of Albanian voters, mainly exiles, have been erased from these two municipalities.
