Syrian Human Rights Monitor said he received “confirmed” from sources within the Islamic state militant group, that his leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, is dead.
In a statement issued Tuesday, Observers' leader Abdel Rahman said Baghdad had died in the province of Deir al-Zor east of Syria, but did not specify when or how.
The White House and US Army officials said they could not confirm Baghdad's death.
A month ago, Russia's Defence Ministry has said it believes it killed Baghdad in an air strike in the town of Raka.
His death was reported several times by mistake in the past.
